New Publication Reveals Income's Impact on Fruit and Vegetable Consumption

A new publication by the USDA's Economic Research Service reports the findings of a study on how a household's income impacts what they eat. Are Lower Income Households Willing and Able To Budget for Fruits and Vegetables? (PDF/290 KB), reports that for six out of seven selected types of food, households with an income below 130 percent of the poverty line spend less money than higher income households. However, these households, when given a small increase in income, will allocate more money to only two out of the seven products, beef and frozen prepared foods. These foods may be priorities for reasons of taste and convenience. For additional money to be allocated to fruits and vegetables, a household’s income needs to be slightly greater than 130 percent of the poverty line.

New Study Reveals Benefits of Switchgrass-based Ethanol

Switchgrass grown for biofuel production produced 540 percent more energy than needed to grow, harvest and process it into cellulosic ethanol, according to estimates from a large on-farm study by researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Results from the five-year study involving fields on farms in three states highlights the prairie grass' potential as a biomass fuel source that yields significantly more energy than is consumed in production and conversion into cellulosic ethanol. USAgNet reports this is the largest study to date examining the net energy output, greenhouse gas emissions, biomass yields, agricultural inputs and estimated cellulosic ethanol production from switchgrass grown and managed for biomass fuel. A research paper on the findings can be found here.

Study Shows Organic Transition Improved Soil

A study appearing in the Agronomy Journal documented the effect of the transition to organic farming on chemical and biochemical properties of a loam soil through a succession of five crop cycles over a 3-year period. This Spanish study, "Effect of Implementing Organic Farming on Chemical and Biochemical Properties of an Irrigated Loam Soil," found organically fertilized soils showed an increase in quantity and quality of organic matter, and an improvement in nutrient content, compared to inorganically fertilized soils. The study also noted that in general, animal compost improved chemical and biological properties more than vegetal compost.

Manure Management Enhances Value

Ohio researchers say that when animal manure is managed as a nutrient resource, it can generate a nutrient value of up to $136 per acre, says an article on Ohio Ag Connection. In addition to this direct nutrient value, manure can also add micronutrients, organics, and biologicals to the soil, improving soil health and water-holding capacity. By contrast, manure that is over-applied and poorly spread on the soil surface provides fewer nutrients to the soil and results in nutrient loss to the environment.

Poultry Litter Fertilizer Raises Phosphorus and Copper Levels

Testing in North Carolina shows that fields and pastures where poultry litter has been spread as fertilizer show high levels of phosphorus and copper, reports the Winston-Salem Journal. In one county, 84 percent of fields tested had high or very high levels of phosphorus, and 98 percent had high levels of copper. These levels are a concern for crop production, as well as potential groundwater contamination.

USDA Enrolls One Millionth Acre in Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program

USDA has enrolled the one millionth acre in its nationwide Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP). A component of USDA's Conservation Reserve Program, CREP is a voluntary land retirement program that helps agricultural producers protect environmentally sensitive land, decrease erosion, restore wildlife habitat and safeguard ground and surface water. Partnering with tribal, state and federal governments and, in some cases, private groups, USDA establishes contracts with agricultural producers to retire highly erodible and other sensitive cropland and pastureland. During the 10- to 15-year contract period, participants convert enrolled land to grass, trees, wetlands, wildlife cover and other conservation uses.

FDA Warns Public of Possible Botulism Risk (January 18, 2008)

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced that New Era Canning Company, New Era, Mich., is expanding its product recall because of potential Clostridium botulinum (C. botulinum) contamination to all canned green beans and garbanzo beans distributed by the company nationwide over the last five years. C. botulinum can cause botulism, a serious and sometimes life-threatening condition. The affected cans are large institutional-sized containers, weighing approximately six and a half pounds.

Symptoms of botulism poisoning in humans can begin from 6 hours to 2 weeks after eating food that contains the toxin. Symptoms may include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and muscle weakness that moves progressively down the body, affecting the shoulders first, then descending to the upper arms, lower arms, thighs, and calves. Botulism poisoning also can cause paralysis of the breathing muscles, which can result in death unless assistance with breathing (mechanical ventilation) is provided. Individuals who have these symptoms and who may have recently eaten the products under recall or other food products made with them should seek immediate medical attention.

To date, no illnesses have been reported to the FDA; however, consumers should not consume these products, even if they appear to be normal, because of the potential serious risk to health. Consumers who have the affected products or who have used them in recipes should immediately throw the cans and food away.

New Era took this voluntary action in the interest of public health in accordance with FDA's recall request. The company is taking immediate action to retrieve all inventories of the products throughout the distribution chain, including consumers' homes, nursing homes, schools, warehouses, restaurants, retail stores, health care facilities, and other facilities.

For specific brands and codes of green beans and garbanzo beans that are subject to this recall, consumers and retailers can access this information at the following link: http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/newera.html. Please note that New Era produces canned products under other brand names and labels. Therefore, the recalled products may not necessarily be labeled with New Era's name. Also, the cans may bear a variety of product codes or no codes at all. Regardless of brand name or label, or the presence or absence of a code, the recalled cans should not be opened or used, and should be disposed of as described below. Consumers who are not sure if a product is subject to the recall should still throw it out as a precaution.

Any food that may contain the recalled canned beans should be disposed of carefully. Even tiny amounts of the C. botulinum toxin can cause serious illness when ingested, inhaled, or absorbed through the eye or a break in the skin. Skin contact should be avoided as much as possible, and hands should be washed immediately after handling the food.

When disposing of these products, double-bag the cans in plastic bags. Make sure the bags are tightly closed, then place in a trash receptacle for non-recyclable trash outside of the home. Restaurants and institutions should ensure that such products are only placed in locked receptacles that are not accessible to the public. Additional instructions for safe disposal may be found at www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/botulism_g.htm . Anyone with questions may call FDA at 1-888-SAFEFOOD.

FDA and the Michigan Department of Agriculture launched a joint investigation of New Era's processing plant. This investigation resulted in the identification of C. botulinum contamination in several lots of canned green beans and one lot of garbanzo beans, the identification of serious food violations, and this expanded recall. Original findings of this investigation resulted in the company voluntarily recalling green beans in December 2007 (http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2007/NEW01764.html ), and green beans, Mexican-style chili beans, and dark red kidney beans in January (http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/newera01_08.html ).

FDA initiated the inspection at New Era, along with inspections of other low acid canned food (LACF) manufacturers, following four cases of botulism in consumers who had consumed canned hot dog chili sauce in the summer of 2007. In light of these botulism cases, FDA increased its inspection efforts to assure that manufacturers of all types of LACF products are adhering to applicable FDA requirements. These actions illustrate the need for companies to operate under adequate preventive control systems.

As part of the ongoing investigation, FDA issued an Order of Need for Emergency Permit to New Era. This order prohibits the manufacture and shipment of the company's low acid canned foods across state lines until they demonstrate to FDA's satisfaction that the products are safe. In addition, the Michigan Department of Agriculture, under its state authority, has embargoed New Era's entire inventory of low acid canned products contained in the company's warehouses in Michigan. As a result, New Era is not currently distributing any products.

Prevention of foodborne illness is a key element of the FDA's new Food Protection Plan , launched November 6, 2007.

Dorgan Expects Schafer Will Be Next Secretary of Agriculture (21/01/2008)

Senator Dorgan says he expects former North Dakota governor Ed Schafer will easily be confirmed as the next US Secretary of Agriculture.

Senate Ag committee chair Tom Harkin has scheduled confirmation hearings on Schafer`s nomination on Thursday.

Dorgan and Senator Kent Conrad plan to accompany Schafer to the hearings.

"Ed Schafer is a North Dakotan, and it`s an honor to have him in that position," Dorgan says. "We`re trying to work through a farm bill right now. We`ve got a couple threats of presidential vetoes against the House and the Senate, but we`re hoping to work through that to avoid that."

Dorgan says he expects to hear an answer on Schafer`s nomination by next week.

Lake Land, MHS land grant to help provide agriculture education

MATTOON — Autumn Gillespie isn’t a farmer’s daughter. In fact, the Mattoon High School senior really doesn’t have any sort of agriculture background.

However, this hasn’t stopped Gillespie from buying her own horse; she just keeps it at a friend’s stable rather than at her house. She is also active in the rodeo circuit and is looking forward to pursuing a career in the agriculture industry.

“I have known for a very, very long time that I want to go into veterinary medicine,” she said.

This year, when the opportunity arose for her to take agriculture classes at her high school, Gillespie said she was thrilled. She signed up for the animal science class and also the newly formed FFA chapter, of which she was elected president.

“Five of us went to the National FFA Convention this year and it was a wonderful opportunity. The sessions were very inspiring,” she said.

Gillespie and her classmates received funding for the trip through a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant.

The grant, which was secured by Lake Land College and Mattoon High School, is worth nearly $50,000. These funds will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Lake Land and the high school.

It all started when, a little more than a year ago, Lake Land officials learned that MHS was considering a new agriculture program. The college became an active part of the process.

“Curt Rincker, Lake Land agriculture instructor and division chair, joined forces with the Mattoon administration to assist with the planning and development of the program,” said Ron Sanderson, Lake Land special projects coordinator.

Rincker and Sanderson are co-project directors for the grant.

Lake Land works with other schools in the area to ensure their agriculture curriculums are aligned with and students are prepared to enter Lake Land ag programs after high school.

“With Mattoon being the largest high school in the college’s district, myself and Lake Land officials felt it was important to work with the school to generate interest in and provide exposure to the numerous career opportunities in agriculture,” Rincker said.

“Because we are located in the heart of an agriculture region, it is important to train students for agriculture-related jobs and ensure that continuity exists between the secondary and postsecondary educational programs,” said Jeri Beel, director of grants development.

Mattoon already has 100 students enrolled in the agriculture program, which was one of five goals set forth through the grant.

Another goal is to help train 20 middle and high school teachers in the Mattoon district on how to incorporate agriculture into their existing curriculums. This correlates with the third goal, which is to promote agriculture careers to middle school students so that interested students select the proper classes in high school which will prepare them to enroll in a college agriculture program and eventually obtain an associate degree or higher in an agriculture-related field, said Beel.

“We also wanted to create an out-of-the-classroom experience, such as field trips or the National FFA Convention,” Beel said.

The final goal for the grant is to develop a model for agriculture education so that other schools interested in implementing a similar program would have a step-by-step procedure to emulate.

Gillespie, an example of a student this grant has helped, already is planning to attend Lake Land next fall before transferring to Eastern Illinois University to finish an undergraduate degree. From there, she said she plans to attend the University of Illinois.

“It has definitely helped me out to be able to take agriculture classes in my high school and to be involved in FFA,” she said, adding that FFA “is not just about agriculture — it opens up so many opportunities.”
